What happens if you fail in your final exam?

What happens if you fail your final exam is a question that lots of people worry about when they're getting ready for their final standing test. If you are feeling stressed about your finals and you are thinking "what happens if I fail my exam" then you are not alone. Failing your exam does not mean you will automatically fail the whole course. The impact of a grade on your final exam really depends on how your instructor calculates your grade.

Most instructors use a formula to calculate your course grade. They add your grade to the grade you get on your final exam but they use different weights for each one. The formula looks like this:

Final Course Grade = your current grade times the remaining weight, plus your final exam grade times the weight of the exam.

Lets say you have a B grade, which's 85 percent and you get a bad grade on your final exam lets say 50 percent. If the final exam is 10 percent of your grade then your grade will only drop a little bit to 81.5 percent, which is a B minus.

If the final exam is 20 percent of your grade then your grade will drop more to 78 percent, which's a C plus.

If the final exam is 40 percent of your grade then your grade will drop a lot to 71 percent, which's a C minus.

You need to be careful because some courses have a rule that if you fail the exam then you will automatically fail the whole course no matter what your grade was before.

If you do fail your exam you should check your grades online to make sure they are correct and you should go to your instructors office hours to ask about what you can do. You can also use an exam grade calculator, like the one on CalcGrade.com to see how different grades, on your final exam will affect your grade. This way you can stop guessing about your grades.
